Become a Yachtmaster

RYA Coastal Yachtmaster is the natural next step for Coastal Skippers & the ideal preparation for those who aspire to Yachtmaster Offshore.

WWS will provide you with the country’s top RYA Yachtmaster Preparation Courses.

Whats the difference between Yachtmaster Offshore & Coastal?

Basically, its the same Prep Week & Navigation skills for Coastal YM & YM Offshore but YM Coastal has less requirements & is not examined to the same level as YM Offshore.

YACHTMASTER COASTAL REQUIREMENTS

YACHTMASTER OFFSHORE REQUIREMENTS

Both can be Commercially Endorsed to allow the holder to skipper a vessel up to 24 metres LOA in the following waters…

YM Coastal   –  up to 20 Nautical Miles from a safe haven.
YM Offshore – up to 150 Miles from a safe haven.

Often candidates come to us with all the requirements for YM Offshore but lacking a little in confidence. Knowing that they can take the YM Coastal Exam instead allows alot of people to relax during the Prep Week & then they’re free to really get stuck in to the “Skills & Drills”…its all about learning at the end of the day, about having a growth mindset… the exams just give it all structure & that can actually get in the way of learning for some people.

All Candidates must have…

VHF SRC

Valid First Aid

Valid Sea Survival

Completed Logbook

Skills You’ll Learn
Marina Mooring in all conditions under sail & power
Night Navigation
Man Overboard recovery under sail and power
Restricted visibility (Blind) navigation and Advanced GPS navigation techniques
Close quarters handling under sail and power

Practicing these skills and drills in an intense environment will help you pass your YM exam and make you a better skipper.

We advise all our YM Candidates to take both RYA & Irish Sailing Yachtmaster Exams due to Brexit related regulatory difficulties.

5 days training & 2 days Exam Charter

What you’ll do
A Yachtmaster is a more experienced Coastal Skipper, able to operate in tougher conditions for longer periods of time. You will command the yacht on short passages by day and by night and practice lots of close quarters boat handling techniques under power and sail. Your experienced instructor will tailor the course to your specific needs.

Yachtmaster Requirements
Navigation Theory to Yachtmaster Offshore Standard
50 days aboard
5 days as skipper
2500 miles logged (Half the qualifying miles must be tidal)
5 passages of over 60 miles including 2 overnight and 2 as skipper
VHF SRC certificate
Valid First Aid certificate

Yachtmaster Exam
The exam is conducted by an independent RYA examiner over 2 days with no more than 4 candidates on board at a time. The examiners allow you to show what you know rather than make life hard. With our personalised Yachtmaster Preparation courses, you may even enjoy your exam!
