Do the drills, hone the skills, take the test, be the best…be a Yachtmaster!

What do you get from Wild West Sailing?

Here’s how we set you up for Yachtmaster success!

Amazing Examiner We love our Scottish examiner! He is an outdoor educator, RNLI Trainer and lifeboat helm and offshore racer. He examined all our Cruising Instructors when they did their Yachmaster. He is thorough and fair, is there to help you pass. He is both an RYA/MCA and Irish Sailing Examiner

Perfect boat You will be trained and tested for 7 days on our mint-condition Jeanneau Sun Odessey 36i. Watson Sails, Harken running gear and Yanmar 30HP engine with 3 blade fixed propellor mean she goes where you want her to, under sail and power.

Outstanding training “Simply the Best!” as Tina Turner said and here’s why…

You come to us with your experience. It’s our job to fine tune you into a skipper who plans thoroughly, leads calmly and executes perfectly and is adaptable to changing circumstances, a real leader.

Who The WWS Principal is your Yachtmaster coach. With experience on every type of boat from dinghies to Americas Cup yachts, and a career on power driven workboats, you will benefit from our exposure to different boats, skippers and scenarios at sea. That’s a huge funnel of skills that does not exist at any other school.

How – First we show you how the boat wants to behave and then you learn to use that awareness to make the boat go where you want it to. Easy!

Then we break down each task, be it marina parking or man overboard recovery, into easy-to-remember steps so you can expertly command your crew through each job for your examiner. Expert!

Finally, we use a “Stacked Learning” system. As you progress through the week, as the scenarios get more difficult, you will realise the skills transfer. Everything builds into everything else. Whether its boat approach angle, speed or mooring rope setup, we have you covered with the most efficient, easy to repeat and useful way to get the job done. Success!

Be a better sailor with a Yachtmaster Prep from Wild West Sailing!

VHF Short Range Certificate

Valid First Aid (Must have Hypothermia training)

Valid Sea Survival (Irish Sailing only)

Whats the difference between RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Offshore & RYA Coastal Yachtmaster?

RYA/MCA YACHTMASTER OFFSHORE REQUIREMENTS

RYA COASTAL YACHTMASTER REQUIREMENTS

IRISH SAILING YACHTMASTER REQUIREMENTS

RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Offshore is more advanced than Coastal and has a higher level of requirements.

Irish Sailing has even higher requirements for Yachtmaster.

It all starts with your sea miles

RYA Coastal YM RYA/MCA YM Offshore Irish Sailing YM Offshore
800 NM 2000 NM 3000 NM

WWS runs the same Prep Week for all Yachtmaster Exams. The Skills & Drills are the same at all levels, but the exams and requirements are easier for Coastal Yachtmaster.

All Yachtmaster Qualifications can be Commercially Endorsed to allow the holder to skipper a vessel up to 24 metres LOA in the following waters…

YM Coastal   –  up to 20 Nautical Miles from a safe haven.
YM Offshore – up to 150 Miles from a safe haven.

Post Brexit, we advise Yachtmaster candidates seeking to commercially endorse, to apply for the Irish Sailing Yachtmaster too. It’s the same exam just higher requirements and a small extra admin cost.

Yachtmaster Finishing School (15 Days)

If you have the sea miles, night hours and qualifying passages, you’re determined to get your RYA Yachtmaster but don’t have the confidence in your skippering ability or maybe close quarters handling or the engine maintenance…there’s just 1 or 2 things holding you back…

Sign up for our Yachtmaster Finishing School & give your self the best chance to get to the RYA Commercial Yachtmaster Standard. This 15 Day program is Module3 of the standard commercial Yachtmaster course.

If you’ll put in the time, we will put the time into you.

Coastal Skipper PLUS

If you don’t have the sea miles, night hours or qualifying passages, why not combine the RYA Yachtmaster Shorebased Navigation course with us this winter and a Round IRL Voyage for the ultimate, a WWS Coastal Skipper PLUS!

This 16 Day program is not just a stepping stone to your Yachtmaster…it’s a step towards serious, professional skippering ability.

“I did the “Yachtmaster Prep” training course for both Yachtmaster Coastal and Offshore with Dave. I found him to be extremely competent and knowledgeable about what was needed for the course. He has a relaxed approach which helped a lot, as over the course I was allowed to focus on any areas I was weak on, in my case some marina manoeuvres in close quarters. I learned a lot from the course and I really enjoyed it too. I’ve done a raft of maritime courses over the years in and these were two of the best. This is why I went back for more and I’ve been recommending it ever since.”
